2017 Budget Supports Job Creation w/out Tax Hike
The Wayne County Commissioners adopted the 2017 County Budget Dec. 1, 2016. The balanced budget totals $31,966,127.84 in General Fund and Debt Service payments and shows an overall increase of $994,351.61, which represents an increase of 3.2%.
A transfer of prior year surplus has been used to balance the budget without a tax increase. In 2016, the county recognized an unexpected increase in boarding fees for non-county prisoners and delayed several capital improvement projects. Prior years surplus from savings in bond re-funding and prudent financial management have provided this opportunity.
In this budget, the Commissioners have provided a line-item to fund a joint venture with the Wayne Economic Development Corporation for economic initiatives that fuel job creation and assist business development. As well, the budget provides for a financial commitment to the proposed Drug Court Initiative and a contribution to the Capital Investment Fund for a future high-speed, broadband internet project. The Wayne County Commissioners would like to thank all the Elected Officials and Department heads for their assistance in maintaining the expenditures within their respective offices.
The Commissioners have always been committed to maintaining fiscal responsibility to the taxpayers of Wayne County, while continuing to provide all the necessary services to all county residents. The teamwork as shown by the Elected Officials, department heads and employees has allowed the Commissioners to present a balanced and responsible budget without a tax increase.
